C for Colour Harmony
In photography, colour has a quiet power. It shapes the mood of an image, directs the viewer’s attention, and brings together people, places and details into a cohesive whole. When we speak of colour harmony, we’re not talking about rigid palettes or trend-led aesthetics. We’re talking about creating a soft, visual rhythm – one that feels natural, timeless, and entirely you.
Whether you’re preparing for a maternity, newborn or family session, the colours you wear play a vital role. They help your images feel balanced, elegant and emotionally resonant. My approach is grounded in simplicity – less about making a statement, more about letting your story unfold beautifully.
The human eye responds instinctively to colour. Warm tones evoke comfort and intimacy, cool tones feel calm and refined. When we choose clothing and styling elements that blend in tone – not match perfectly, but flow together – the result is seamless. You don’t notice individual outfits; you see connection, love, presence.
Soft neutrals – creams, greys, muted pastels, earthy tones – are a wonderful foundation. They photograph with grace in both natural light and studio settings. These tones age beautifully too, ensuring your images feel relevant for years to come.
The key is coordination, not uniformity. Think of each person’s outfit as a variation on a theme – different textures, slightly varied tones, subtle patterns. A linen shirt, a chunky knit jumper, a flowing dress… each adds depth without distraction.
Accessories, blankets or textured fabrics can add gentle layers, especially in newborn or at-home sessions. The overall impression should feel relaxed and real – never over-styled or forced.
Colour choices do more than flatter. They set the tone – romantic and soft, playful and warm, intimate and quiet. If you’re unsure where to begin, I’m always happy to guide you. Every session includes a styling consultation, and I offer access to a client wardrobe filled with handpicked, camera-friendly pieces in versatile tones.
My goal is simple: for you to look back at your images and feel not just that you looked beautiful – but that you looked like yourself, at your most genuine and connected.
