When is the Best Time for Newborn Photoshoot?

The arrival of your little one is a whirlwind of emotions, sleepless nights, and pure love. It is natural to want to pause time and keep these memories forever. As a photographer, one of the most common questions I get asked by expectant parents is: “When is the best time for a newborn photoshoot?”

While beautiful portraits can be created at any age, there is a magical, fleeting window that is perfect for capturing those sleepy, curled-up poses we all adore. Here is everything you need to know to plan your session in my cosy home studio.

The Ideal Window: 5 to 14 Days New

Technically, the best time for a newborn photoshoot is within the first 5 to 14 days after birth.

Why this specific timeframe?

  • Deep Sleep: In these first two weeks, babies spend most of their time sleeping deeply. This allows me to gently guide them into those adorable, natural poses without disturbing their rest.

  • Curled-Up Poses: Fresh from the womb, newborns naturally curl up into the fetal position. This flexibility allows for those heart-melting photos where they look so tiny and peaceful.

  • Baby Acne: Developing baby acne usually happens a bit later (around week 3 or 4), so photographing them early often ensures that creamy, flawless skin finish.

However, I completely understand that the first few days are for you. Recovery and bonding come first. That is why I always leave plenty of time during our sessions for feeding, cuddling, and settling in. My studio is a safe, warm space where you can relax while I take care of the memories.

Understanding the Timeline: What to Expect

Every baby is different, but here is a general guide on how age affects the session:

  • 5–10 Days Old: This is the “golden hour” for newborn photography. Your baby is likely to be very sleepy and pliable, making it the easiest time to achieve those intricate studio poses.

  • 10–14 Days Old: Still a wonderful time! Your baby might be slightly more alert, meaning we might capture some beautiful wide-eyed shots alongside the sleepy ones.

  • 3+ Weeks Old: Babies start to uncurl, stretch out, and spend more time awake. While the “froggy” poses might be harder to achieve, this is a great time for wrapped shots and capturing their emerging personality. If you missed the two-week window, don’t worry—we can still create stunning images!

When Should I Book My Session?

Because babies rarely arrive exactly on their due date, booking can seem tricky. The best approach is to book your session after your 20-week scan.

I only take a limited number of due dates per month to ensure I have the flexibility to fit you in, whether your baby arrives early or late. Once you are on my calendar, your spot is guaranteed. All you need to do is send me a quick message once your little one arrives, and we will finalise the date.

What If We Need to Reschedule?

Life with a newborn is unpredictable. Health and safety are my top priorities.

  • Health: If you or your baby are feeling unwell, or if there are medical complications, we will absolutely reschedule. There is no penalty for prioritising health.

  • Recovery: If you had a difficult delivery and need more time to recover, please let me know. We can adjust the style of the photoshoot to accommodate an older, more alert baby if needed.

Preparing for Your Visit to the Studio

Coming to my home studio means you don’t have to worry about cleaning your house for a photographer! To make your experience as stress-free as possible, here is a checklist of what to bring to your newborn photoshoot:

  1. Essentials for Baby: Plenty of nappies, wipes, and milk (breast or bottle). Babies tend to feed more frequently during sessions.

  2. Soother (Dummy): Even if you don’t plan to use one long-term, a dummy can be a huge help for soothing during transitions between poses.

  3. Comfortable Clothing for You: For parent shots, I recommend neutral, solid colours (creams, whites, soft greys) without heavy patterns/logos. Wear layers—the studio is kept very warm for the baby’s comfort!

  4. Snacks and Water: Sessions can take 2-4 hours, so bring something to keep your energy up.

  5. Relaxation: Bring a book or just sit back and watch. I have experience safely handling newborns, so you can enjoy a well-deserved break with a cup of tea.

Final Thoughts

While the best time for a newborn photoshoot is generally under two weeks, the most important thing is that you feel ready and comfortable. Whether your baby is 7 days old or 7 weeks old, I am here to capture the love and connection of your growing family.

Q: How far in advance should I book? A: I recommend booking after your 20-week scan to guarantee availability. My calendar fills up quickly!

Q: What if my baby has baby acne or flaky skin? A: Don’t worry about it. I use professional lighting and editing techniques to gently smooth skin while keeping it looking natural.

Q: Do I need to bring outfits for the baby? A: My studio is fully stocked with beautiful wraps, headbands, bonnets, and props. You only need to bring the essentials (nappies, milk, etc.) and a going-home outfit.
