Welcoming a new baby into the world is one of life’s most unforgettable experiences. Those early days, filled with wonder, sleepy cuddles, and the tiniest yawns, pass faster than any of us ever expect. As a photographer and a mum myself, I understand just how precious those fleeting newborn moments are. That’s why I often get asked: when is the best time to take newborn photos?
Let’s dive deep into that question, along with a few others you might be wondering about as you prepare to capture your baby’s first portraits. Whether you’re expecting your first child or welcoming a new addition to the family, I hope this guide helps you feel more confident, informed, and inspired.
Is 1 Month Too Old for Newborn Pictures?
The ideal time for classic newborn photography is typically between 5 and 14 days after birth. During this window, babies are generally sleepier, more easily swaddled, and still have that lovely curled-up newborn posture that works beautifully for natural posing.
But what if you’ve missed that window? Is 1 month too late? Absolutely not! Babies at 3 to 4 weeks may be more awake and less flexible, but they’re just as beautiful. You may not get the same sleepy poses, but what you do get is more eye contact, gentle stretches, and growing personality. I’ve photographed many 4–5-week-old babies who gave the sweetest gazes right into the camera. The session might look a bit different, but the magic is still completely there.
When to Start Tummy Time?
You may be surprised that tummy time can begin as early as 1–2 weeks old, for just a minute or two at a time while baby is awake and supervised. It’s an important part of their physical development, strengthening neck and shoulder muscles.
In my sessions, we don’t typically include tummy time as part of the photoshoot, especially in those early weeks. Instead, I position babies in safe and comfortable poses that are developmentally appropriate and based on how your little one is feeling on the day. No pressure, no forcing anything, just responding to your baby’s natural rhythm.
Should Parents Be in Newborn Photos?
In short: yes! Please do. I know many new mums feel tired, not camera-ready, or just overwhelmed. I’ve been there too. But I always gently encourage parents to step in front of the camera, even for just a few frames.
These aren’t glamour shots; they’re real, emotional, connection-filled moments. A kiss on the forehead, a cuddle on the sofa, your baby resting peacefully on your chest, these are the images your child will treasure most when they grow up. I’ll guide you through the session so you feel comfortable, natural, and most importantly, like yourself.
How Long is the Newborn Stage?
Medically speaking, a newborn is considered a newborn until around 8 weeks of age. But for photography, we think more in terms of flexibility, sleep patterns, and baby’s comfort.
The classic newborn stage for posed photography is considered to be up to 3 weeks old, but don’t stress if you’re outside that range. Every baby is different, and each stage brings its own kind of beauty. For example:
- 5 to 14 days: Very sleepy, curled-up, easy to swaddle and pose
- 3 to 5 weeks: More alert, more stretches, stronger eye contact
- 6 weeks and older: Full of expressions, early smiles, and budding personality; we focus more on lifestyle shots at this stage
What to Wear for Newborn Photos?
This is one of my most frequently asked questions! My advice is always to go with soft, simple, and neutral tones. Think light greys, creams, dusty pinks, soft blues. These shades photograph beautifully and keep the attention on your baby’s face.
Avoid logos, big patterns, or neon colours. Bare feet, cosy knits, and soft textures work wonders.
As part of your session, you’ll also get access to my carefully curated studio wardrobe, which includes:
- Flowy dresses for mums in soft fabrics
- Coordinated baby wraps and knitted outfits
- Blankets, headbands, and minimal props to add character without clutter

What is the Age Limit for Newborn Photography?
There isn’t a hard cut-off, but newborn photography is generally recommended within the first 6 weeks for best results.
After that, babies become more alert and stronger physically, which changes the dynamic of the session. If your baby is older, we’ll adjust the approach. Perhaps more in arms, wrapped in your embrace, or captured during snuggles on a cosy blanket.
I’ve photographed babies up to 8 weeks and still created stunning results. The key is setting expectations and being flexible with poses and timing.
How Long Does a Newborn Photo Session Take?
In my cosy home studio just outside Wolverhampton, newborn sessions are never rushed. They typically last 2 to 3 hours, allowing time for:
- Feeding
- Nappy changes
- Settling baby
- Taking breaks as needed
- And working gently at baby’s pace
I want this to be a calm, enjoyable experience for the whole family, especially for new parents who might be sleep-deprived and a little overwhelmed. You can sit back with a cup of tea, relax on the sofa, and just enjoy watching the magic happen.
Bonus Tip: When to Book Your Session
To secure your spot in that ideal 5 to 14 day window, it’s best to book during your second or early third trimester. I pencil in your due date and adjust once baby arrives.
Don’t worry if your baby arrives earlier or later. I always leave some wiggle room in my calendar for flexibility. My priority is making sure your baby’s first portraits happen in the most relaxed, safe and beautiful way possible.
Final Thoughts
There’s no “perfect” time, only the time that works for you and your baby. Whether your newborn is 7 days or 27 days old, what matters most is capturing the love, the details, and the bond that’s already blossoming.
Let’s create something timeless together.
Warmly,
Maria Tylec – Your Photographer in Wolverhampton
